Emma Willard School x Mt. Ida Food Pantry
Mt. Ida Preservation Hall// Troy NY// May 2025
Emma Willard School sought a community-based partnership that would deepen students’ personal and professional development while strengthening their long-standing volunteer relationship with the Mt. Ida Food Pantry. I designed and led a student-driven mural and fundraising initiative inside the pantry, grounding the work in service, listening, and real-world impact. Students volunteered on-site, interviewed pantry staff and patrons, and collaborated with community partners to ensure the mural reflected shared values of care, dignity, and nourishment. Alongside the creative process, students learned fundraising strategies, public speaking, and advocacy by engaging supporters both in person and online. The program united students from diverse concentrations, allowing them to broaden their worldview while aligning their individual career goals with meaningful causes through hands-on, community-centered work. The finished mural now serves as both a welcoming visual landmark and a fundraising catalyst supporting critical pantry renovations.

“It brings so much character to the community hall. I was impressed with how well the design took into account so many themes and ideas from the community that are relevant to our neighborhood and history. Overall, it was great to work with you. You clearly communicated your needs even in the face of some push back. You responded quickly to communications. You were on time, a responsible steward of the space, and put in extra effort to accelerate to meet timelines. You did a great job designing and executing the project.”
