The C.O.C.O.A. House - Schenectady NY // December 2025
Through a grant from the Capital Region Arts Center, I initiated and created a commemorative mural honoring our late mentor, Walter Simpkins, known throughout the city as the “Father of Schenectady.” With the support of William Rivas, director of C.O.C.O.A. House and one of Walter’s protégés, the mural was installed in a youth-centered space shaped by Walter’s character and influence, making the location deeply intentional. Walter dedicated his life to uplifting youth, families, incarcerated individuals, and those navigating addiction, leading with compassion, conviction, and faith in something greater than himself. The portrait was rendered with heightened realism so his presence would feel immediate, grounding the room in memory and strength. His galaxy-inspired background draws from his signature phrase, “The great creator always has a master plan,” while the supernova tie, envisioned as a window into his soul, reflects his desire to become one with the stars. His historic Moses Viney reenactment hat, honoring the formerly enslaved man who escaped and settled in the city, rests upon my mascot Joy, symbolically bridging past, present, and future as the youth who gather there continue to be shaped by his character, actions, and philosophy.

TESTIMONIAL
William Rivas - Director of Operations - C.O.C.O.A. House
“The execution of this project was extremely vital to the fabric of the community relationships necessary for growth. This project was done while the youth in my program were present so that the cycle of Leadership and Love could continue. The lessons they learned and the dialogues they were a part of will shape who they become and what they do. Eugene is amazing, he brings so much heart and love to his project that it is hard not to be better after the experience is over. This project was very emotional for me, and there were days when I questioned “why me and why now?”, truth is Eugene was instrumental in getting me through this process, and I will always appreciate him for that.”
