SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

SYEP City of Albany x Albany Center Gallery

Albany Center Gallery - Albany, NY // August 2020

Through the City of Albany’s Summer Youth Employment Program, high school students from the Tony Clement Center for Education participated in a six-week, paid mural program hosted at Albany Center Gallery. I facilitated a process that guided students through conceptual development, design, and execution of personal movable murals on large-scale panels. The program centered youth voice, autonomy, and professional standards, positioning students not as volunteers but as working artists. Participants were encouraged to explore personal narratives while learning the full creative process from idea to finished work. By creating within a gallery setting, students gained exposure to professional art environments and expectations. A core lesson of the program emphasized the value of creative labor and the importance of fair compensation in the arts.

Post Results:

  • Students were paid for participating in the program

  • Student-designed 8’ x 4’ movable mural panels

  • Professional gallery-based creation experience
