Amplified Voices x Albany Public Libraries
Traveling Mural @ various NYS Public Libraries // August 2021
Amplified Voices partnered with the Albany Public Library to create a traveling mural program that brought youth voice, art, and activism into public civic spaces. Teens from Albany, Troy, and Schenectady participated through a paid workforce development program focused on mentorship, storytelling, and creative advocacy. Students collaboratively designed a mobile mural that toured library branches, paired with live spoken word and music programming. The project positioned youth voices as visible and valued while transforming libraries into sites of cultural dialogue and connection.

“In my 15+ years as a librarian, I have worked on hundreds of projects with community partners, but this stands out as the most impactful and significant project I’ve been a part of. Eugene’s approach centers on teen selfhood and autonomy, treating youth as equals and meeting them first as whole individuals before delving into art history or instruction. His curriculum began with identity, emotion, and aspiration, incorporating self-care practices like yoga and meditation, which showed how deeply he values each student as a person. Eugene is a natural teacher and incredible artist, combining compassion and empathy with a firm yet flexible approach that meets students where they are. He works alongside them, fostering collaboration and connection, and consistently creating an environment that feels bright and celebratory.
